PROBLEM SOLVER / KNITWEAR

I shrank a sweater: what can I do now?.

First identify whether the sweater felted or merely dried out of shape. Some distortion may respond to careful professional reshaping; felting is often not fully reversible, so avoid promised “miracle fixes.”

01 / FIELD NOTE

Stop the damaging treatment

Do not run a second hot wash or tumble dry in an attempt to loosen fibres. Check the label and keep the sweater away from direct heat while deciding what to do.

02 / FIELD NOTE

Assess the change

A compact, dense surface suggests felting after heat and agitation. A garment stretched in one direction may have changed shape during wet hanging; that is a different problem.

03 / FIELD NOTE

Consider cautious reshaping only when permitted

If the garment may be wetted, gentle flat reshaping by hand may help some distortion. Do not use force or household chemicals based on viral tricks; consider a textile-care specialist for valuable items.

04 / FIELD NOTE

Prevent a repeat

Check the wash tub for very-mild and hand-wash marks, and the square for flat drying and no-tumble restrictions. Woolmark advises flat drying many wet wool sweaters.
